Hydro - Permits and legislation

The Environment Agency (or Scottish Environmental Protection Agency in Scotland) has responsibility for all water courses in England and Wales and permission must be sought from the EA when diverting water for the purpose of hydroelectric. This is in the form of a water abstraction licence, and is needed for most hydro schemes (even at the small scale). This section contains more information about permission requirements and how to obtain a licence.
