In England, local authorities (in this context referring to district or unitary authorities rather than parish or town councils) are required to produce local level planning policy to provide a clear framework to guide development in their area. A range of documents, called local development documents, are produced and these are known collectively as the Local Development Framework (LDF).
These must be in accordance with the both national planning policy (PPSs) and regional planning policy (the relevant Regional Spatial Strategy). This section provides more information and guidance on local development documents and other polices relevant at the local level.
